Libertarian Issues Guide

2:28 pm on Thursday, October 28, 2004

David Hogberg analyzes Kerry and Bush on multiple issues from a libertarian perspective.

I pretty much agree with him on most of these issues, although I am not too confident that the Republican congress would restrain government spending, which in my mind neutralizes Kerry’s advantage there. Spending money for pork has wide, bi-partisan support.

Not sure if you’ve written about this already, but what do you think of Michael Badnarik? Assuming he had a chance to be elected (rather than simply siphoning votes from Bush or Kerry)would you be inclined to favor him over Bush?

Actually I havn’t reserched Badnarik too much. This election to me is only about national security.

I was deeply disappointed by the split in the Liberatarian party about the war. I don’t know where Badnarik stands on that issue but, I would be inclined to support Bush in this election regardless of who is running for election because I think he has the right vision, has made the correct, if difficult decisions, and, unlike many, I believe that the war has in fact been handled fairly well and that we are winning it. Because I think Bush should be rewarded, not punished for this I would be likely to vote for him.

If, the main opposition candidate was running on a platform that expressed complete support for Bush’s decision to go to war and was running this election primarily on domestic issues then that candidate might have a chance at winning my vote.

In general I am sypathetic of the libertarian positions. However, I do think that we need, as a society, a safety net. The challenge is in making sure that we have a safety not, not a hammock.
