Not necessary to prevent this from happening or to convince the children that it was wrong, but necessary from the school's point of view. If there is one thing that Columbine and it's aftermath did, it was to convince school administrators that it is far better to be seen as overreacting (from a protect-me-from-being-sued standpoint) than underreacting.
