Dumb Republicans
House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) complained directly to President Bush yesterday about the FBI raid, while House Majority Leader John A. Boehner (R-Ohio) predicted a constitutional showdown before the Supreme Court.
From what I can tell, the case against Rep. Jefferson is pretty strong, certainly strong enough to justify this raid.
I am simpathetic to seperation of powers arguments in general and if this had any aura of being politically motivated or a fishing expedition or anything like that I would have some serious questions about it. Law enforcement MUST be able to investigate Congressmen at times though, and this certainly appears to be one of those times.
Trying to defend congressional priviledge under these circumstances is morally wrong and poltically stupid.
