Information War
Instapundit has a post up on a spat between a media figure and bloggers over war reporting. For the most part, this sort of stuff doesn’t interest me too much, but at the end of his post he has an update that I think brings up an important concept:
Reader Michael Russo notes why this matters:
Notice strategy number one for Al Qaeda based on the Zarquawi safe house documents:
“1. To improve the image of the resistance in society, increase the number of supporters who are refusing occupation and show the clash of interest between society and the occupation and its collaborators. To use the media for spreading an effective and creative image of the resistance.”
Interesting that leveraging the western media before all else is (and presumably has been) Al Qaeda’s top strategy. And shitty how many people have bit hook line and sinker. I bet this will be head line news… or not.
Terrorism is an information war disguised as a military operation. The press plays a symbiotic role, and isn’t willing to address that.
I do think that the characterization of terrorism as an information war is a useful way of looking at things. It is less clear to me how the media should respond. The last thing I want is our media becoming an extension of our military. At the same time, the media is going to be on the front lines of any information based conflict.
Anyone have any idea as to what would be the best solution here?

Thought 1 -
Whatever forum is used, be careful what is said. “Mission accomplished!” obviously is not.
Thought 2 -
Difficult for me to put into words here, but what I am thinking is along the lines of “…use the culture of those you are trying to address… in an understanding, constructive and useful way… not deprecatory, denigrating or destructive…”
