Civility in political discourse
The Anchoress talks about being civil, well worth reading, here is a excerpt
It’s so easy to call someone (or some group) “moronic,” - it is always easier to denigrate and call names than it is to acknowledge and respect the strengths of those you consider an “enemy.” It is easy, but it is shortsighted, too.I routinely praise “the loyal opposition” for their strong points, and I do so for two reasons:
1) There is no reason not to recognise another’s gifts unless you are insecure in your own.
2) If you cannot see past your political fury to acknowledge your opponent’s gifts and strengths, you are bound to succumb to them.
While I may not always succeed, I try to be civil and don’t have a lot of respect for those who are not. Ann Coulter and her ilk don’t get my respect for precisely that reason. There are of course plenty of other examples as well.
Amen - I want to try to build features in to BigBark that allow people that believe in those points to be able to communicate with others who believe in those points. The rest can talk amongst themselves in the rest of the rabble that is the Internets.
