American indicted for treason
A 28-year-old American who has appeared in a series of propaganda videos linked to al-Qaeda was indicted Wednesday on terror-related charges, including treason. It marked the first time the U.S. government has brought such a treason case in more than 50 years, the Justice Department said.Deputy Attorney General Paul McNulty said Adam Gadahn, introduced in a 2004 al-Qaeda video as “Azzam the American,” betrayed the USA and faces a possible death sentence for allegedly joining Osama bin Laden’s network.
The announcement was the latest chapter in Gadahn’s journey from a Southern California convert to Islam to one of the world’s most wanted terrorism suspects. Gadahn, who McNulty said is believed to be hiding in Pakistan, is accused of encouraging attacks against the USA in at least five al-Qaeda videotapes, beginning in October 2004.
Treason is very rarely used as a crime, although all to frequently used as invective in my opinion. This is a real case of treason, and deservedly so.
