12 to 18 months?
Iraq’s own security forces should be able to take over security job within the next 12 to 18 months, General George Casey, the top commander of U.S. military in Iraq said Tuesday.”I believe in 12 to 18 months Iraqi security will be completely capable of taking over their own security,” Casey said in a press conference held in Baghdad’s heavily-fortified Green Zone.
Casey expressed Washington’s willingness to cut its troop level in Iraq, but added that more forces will be called in if necessary.
He also accused Iran and Syria of trying to undermine the American effort to stabilize Iraq, terming their roles “decidedly unhelpful”.
It would certainly be good if Gen. Casey is correct here. Obviously part of the reason for making such a statement is to provide additional pressure to make it come true, reminding the Iraqi government and people that in the end it is really up to them. That said, as long as progress is being made, flexibility on timelines and patience is important. Defeating an insurgency is far from impossible, but it does take time.

I think I would have put more emphasis on just when the 12 to 18 months (and let’s just think 18 months here given the current rate of “progress” in Iraq) will expire…
ANd given the prognosis here, even 18 months might be too short…
