Bush Signs Border Fence Bill
President Bush today signed into law a bill providing for construction of a 700-mile fence along the country’s southwestern border. But he repeated his call for a far more extensive revamping of immigration laws.
“It is an important step toward immigration reform,” Mr. Bush said at the signing in the Roosevelt Room of the White House. The bill is what most House Republicans wanted, but it is not what Senate Republicans, or the president, originally envisioned.
I remain convinced that this will do little to curb illegal immigration, nothing for national security and that it is a total waste of money.
We should welcome anyone who wants to come here and work. The key to stopping illegal immigration, human smuggling and a whole host of related problems is to remove the immigration quotas. It is the cheapest and the most moral choice to make, as well as being of immense benefit to our society.
America is a great nation precisely because we have been so welcoming of immigrants in the past. We don’t need to fear being that same sort of nation now.

Your point about removing immigration quotas is a good one, one I hadn’t considered.
That being said, because the government seems so insistent on having said quotas in place, the government needs to start insisting that employers who hire illegal immigrants be cracked down on. After all, the illegal immigrants won’t try to cross the border if they can’t find anybody willing to hire them.
I will say that just about every immigrant who comes to this country, legally or not, wants to work and be a productive citizen. But if the government is going to cling to the notion that only so many people will be allowed into this country, then they need to do more than just tighten border security.
But again, I say you are right… the best solution may be to just remove the quotas and we’ll be fine.
