Saying it is 'the government' is a bit of a misnomer. There is, and always had been, a broad isolationist streak in America. This is short sighted, but very real.

The American people want immigration quotas, and the government delivers them. Changing peoples mind on this issue will be difficult, but it is the only way forward.

Employer crackdowns will almost certainly prove problematic at best. Between forged documentation and gray market employment the demand will remain.

Your point about removing immigration quotas is a good one, one I hadn't considered.

That being said, because the government seems so insistent on having said quotas in place, the government needs to start insisting that employers who hire illegal immigrants be cracked down on. After all, the illegal immigrants won't try to cross the border if they can't find anybody willing to hire them.

I will say that just about every immigrant who comes to this country, legally or not, wants to work and be a productive citizen. But if the government is going to cling to the notion that only so many people will be allowed into this country, then they need to do more than just tighten border security.

But again, I say you are right... the best solution may be to just remove the quotas and we'll be fine.
