Ancient Fossils, Seeds of a New Debate on Warming
This New York Times article is fascinating on how paleo-climatoligists are engaged in a major debate over how much CO2 concentrations in the past have related to global climate. Obviously it has major implications for today’s issues. More than anything else, I think it underlines that our current state of knowledge regarding what drives climate change is quite rudimentary.
The whole thing is well worth reading, but this one bit seems especially important:
Skeptics say CO2 crusaders simply find the Phanerozoic data embarrassing and irreconcilable with public alarms. “People come to me and say, ‘Stop talking like this, you’re hurting the cause,’ ” said Dr. Giegengack of Penn.
I submit that an accurate understanding of what factors drive climate change cannot hurt ‘the cause’ of combating global warming. When ‘the cause’ is more important than good science, which I think is happening more and more, we are moving into very dangerous territory.

Yeah Dave!!
The greatest delight of all in the global warming debate is that the extremes in both ends of the argument can find plenty to satisfy their own confirmation biases.
The only truth is that we do not know for certain, do not have a decent handle on likely theory to explain, either the cause nor the long term effects of the current increases in CO2 and global average tempertures.
