What It Takes to Make a Student

This New York Times article on trying to eliminate the racial and poverty gaps in education is well worth reading.  There is too much to really summarize, but it is a fascinating subject.

The article concludes that eliminating this gap is achievable, but only with further massive reforms.  I am less sanguine that total elimination is achievable, but I do think that a lot of progress could be made.

There are of course a lot of competing ideologies on how best to achieve this end.  I tend to support a fairly radical libertarian idea of making all schools charter schools, to allow different methods for different kids and also let educational methodologies compete in the marketplace.  Other methods might also work of course, but I remain convinced that this is both the most efficient, and most fair means of educating all of our kids.
