Getting what we need
The Belmont Club examines a propossal by Andrew Sullivan. The entire post is worth reading, but one line near the end talks about points that have been greatly on my mind recently.
If America lacked the doctrine and the means to bring order and civility to the Middle East then it should set about acquiring them. Because the challenges will not go away. It must get what it needs. The translators, the cultural knowledge; the weapons systems, the training; the information strategems; the confidence.
I am not sure that his list includes the truly crucial things, not that what he lists isn’t important, but that other, even more important things are not on it.
