President’s Address to the Nation

9:26 am on Thursday, January 11, 2007

I was unable to watch Bush’s speech last night, but I have now read it (transcript here) and overall I am favorably impressed.  Although the biggest component is the ’surge’ which I have expressed doubt about, it does seem like this increase in troops has a definate mission that is somewhat different from what we have done in the past.  Whether it will work or not, I don’t know.  I remain absolutely convinced though that we have to succeed, and part of that is learning what doesn’t work, as a means to learning what will.
One part I think is especially wise though

We will give our commanders and civilians greater flexibility to spend funds for economic assistance. We will double the number of provincial reconstruction teams. These teams bring together military and civilian experts to help local Iraqi communities pursue reconciliation, strengthen the moderates, and speed the transition to Iraqi self-reliance.

I expect that this, if followed through with, will make a bigger difference then the surge and securing of Baghdad.  Also of note is that the oil revenue sharing plan seems to be back on the table and it appears that much greater pressure will be placed upon Syria and Iran to stop causing trouble in Iraq.
