Samuel David Cheney
Mary Cheney gave birth yesterday to perhaps the most anticipated baby in contemporary U.S. politics — her first child, Samuel David Cheney, whom she will raise with her longtime partner, Heather Poe.The 8-pound 6-ounce boy is the sixth grandchild for Dick Cheney. The vice president and his wife, Lynne, both beaming, posed for a photo with him just hours after his 9:46 a.m. birth at Washington’s Sibley Hospital.
First off congratulations to the Cheney family.
There is of course a huge debate over this, mostly on the conservative side, and with some very nasty comments. I suspect that the ‘best’ thing for a child is to have a loving female mother and a loving male father who remain commited together for their entire lives, teach responsibility and indepence and who also can walk on water.
Of course most kids don’t have perfect parents. Beyond that the ‘best’ question is less important then the ‘better’ or ‘worse’ question. I believe that with very few exceptions existence is better then non-existence and therefore Samuel David Cheney is far better off with two loving commited lesbian mothers then he is not existing at all, which is what the choice is. That people would rather this baby didn’t exist, then have to face the concept of lesbian parents is frankly sickening.

For more information about kids with gay or lesbian parents, I have to plug my wife’s documentary “Our House.” The PBS site has some interesting stuff.
