Renewable energy wrecks environment

Biomass energy is also horribly inefficient and destructive of nature. To power a large proportion of the USA, vast areas would need to be shaved or harvested annually. To obtain the same electricity from biomass as from a single nuclear power plant would require 2500 square kilometers of prime Iowa land. “Increased use of biomass fuel in any form is criminal,” remarks Ausubel. “Humans must spare land for nature. Every automobile would require a pasture of 1-2 hectares.”

Other ‘renewables’ aren’t a whole lot better.

I don’t know that “wreaks the environment” is the correct way to express the idea.

Reports down this way (because things agricultural are of some national import) attribute the high prices being paid for commodity products such as dairy and beef in part to the shortage of maize and other grains in the US.

“Say what?”

Because the grains are being diverted to the production of “bio” fuels such as ethanol; because the producers of those products are prepared (at this stage at least) to pay a higher price for the raw material; US farmers are unable to afford or obtain maize for stock feed.

The whole “energy civilisation” has a long way to adapt and evolve before it is self-sustaining. It might well be true that we are living in a golden age based upon the use of “natural fuels”.

I must teach my kids, and grandkids, what I know of sailing and square riggers…

Well, I have a whole lot more faith in human ingenuity then that. I expect that we will continue to have plentiful energy.

And given the fact of entropy, a ‘self-sustaining’ energy civilization (or anything else for that matter) is impossible anyway.
