Science

We used an unbiased metagenomic approach to survey microflora in CCD hives, normal hives, and imported royal jelly. Candidate pathogens were screened for significance of association with CCD by examination of samples collected from several sites over a period of 3 years. One organism, Israeli acute paralysis virus of bees (IAPV), was strongly correlated with CCD.

It’s always the Jews isn’t it.

Seriously though, finding a cause for CCD is a good thing, and this looks like a pretty solid lead.  Anyone who even slightly has looked into the science on this is aware that the Cell Phone or Genetically Modified Foods hypothesis were wacky (although they remain remarkably present in the public consciousness) and that a disease was always the most likely culprit.  Most likely, the Bees will recover from this without a whole lot of effort on our part, as natural selection will do its job here.

some rumors from the net for you. I heard that it was not the Organic Bee farmers (yea there is such a thing) that were having problems with CCD from the larger commerical ones. The larger commerical ones were the ones push the size of the holes in the combs to be bigger for money honey, which stresses the bees. Don’t know if it is ture, but it is food for though.

Well, I certainly wouldn’t put much stock in net rumors like that, pretty obviously that is the sort of thing people want to believe.

However, even if it were true it wouldn’t mean much. Most bee keeping is the large commercial ones (for both pollination and honey) so anything that effected all bees would mostly effect the commercial ones. Of course some commercial hives have escaped unscathed.

One thing that has been talked about is how frequently hives are moved around, which would tend to support the spread of a disease. A local organic hive would be more likely then a commercial hive to escape in that scenario, but would certainly be still at risk.
