China furious at Dalai Lama’s U.S. award
China expressed fury on Tuesday that the United States is to honor the Dalai Lama with an award and warned that the activities of his supporters were increasing in Chinese-controlled Tibet. The Dalai Lama, who has lived in exile in India since staging a failed uprising against Chinese rule in 1959, is to receive the U.S. Congressional Gold Medal on Wednesday after being hosted at the White House by President George W. Bush.
“We are furious,” Tibet’s Communist Party boss, Zhang Qingli, told reporters. “If the Dalai Lama can receive such an award, there must be no justice or good people in the world.”
This event does have some interesting similarities to the Armenian Genocide controversy. China is certainly an important partner, if not ally, in a number of initiatives and certainly its cooperation is useful, if not vital, for the peaceful resolution of a number of issues around the world. North Korea and Iran being the most obvious. This move will obviously anger China, and make these things more difficult.
However, there are some very important differences as well. Most importantly, Tibet is currently occupied by the Chinese. This is an issue that is happening now, not something that is merely historical. Taking a stand, even a diplomatic expense, is appropriate.
I am pleased that Bush is meeting with the Dalai Lama and he is being given the Congressional Gold Medal.
