Open Minds

Roger Kimball has an interesting essay up:  Roger’s Rules: The limits of “openness” (via Instapundit)

It is well worth reading.

To me, an open mind means being willing to accept new evidence, to look for things that would make you change your opinions and judgements.  It is, I think, an unequivocally good thing.

That isn’t though what a lot of people mean by an open mind.  For many, having an open mind means you can’t judge at all, indeed, no matter what evidence you find, changing your opinions and beliefs must never change.  That sort of ‘openness’ isn’t open at all, it is as closed as it is possible to me.
